I’ll start with the good, because there’s plenty of it. From the moment you arrive at Decorum Birmingham, the place certainly makes an impression. Parking is available outside, and once you walk through, you’re greeted by a gorgeous entrance and some seriously impressive décor.
The marble floors, flowers, mirrors, fireplaces, comfortable seating and flower walls all give the place a very high-end feel. There are plenty of areas for photos too, so aesthetically, they’ve absolutely nailed it. You genuinely feel like you’re somewhere special.
I’d actually called beforehand to ask whether coming in around 2–2:30pm for a roast would be okay, and I was told that would be absolutely fine. However, when we arrived, we were told they were still finishing brunch and that we’d have to wait around 30 minutes. That was a little confusing, as I would have simply arrived later if I’d been told this on the phone. It may have been because they had an event taking place, but clearer communication would definitely help.
The staff themselves were polite, helpful and accommodating. We were seated comfortably, and they even brought over a high chair for the little ones, which was appreciated.
There was then a bit of waiting around to order, and I noticed a few tables that arrived after us were served before us. Nothing major, but it was slightly peculiar given that we’d been waiting and had our menus first.
When the food finally arrived, though, the presentation looked fantastic. You really do eat with your eyes, and the plates looked the part.
I had the beef roast, and the beef itself was immaculate. However, the absolute star of the show was the stuffing ball. I’m not even a big stuffing person, but that stuffing was incredible! Everyone at our table agreed it was probably the highlight of the entire meal. Whoever made those deserves some serious credit. 😂
The mashed potato and Yorkshire pudding were spot on, and the portions were generous. The vegetables, however, could have done with a little more cooking, and I would have liked to see a bit more gravy on the plate. Don’t be shy with the gravy!
The drinks were probably the weakest part for me. The strawberry daiquiri was nice, and I completely appreciate that a daiquiri is meant to be blended with ice. My only criticism was that it felt a little too ice-heavy, which seemed to dilute the flavour as I drank it. Towards the end, there was very little of the actual drink left and it became more like a glass of flavoured ice. I think a slightly better balance between the ice and the drink would make it much more enjoyable.
The sour apple mocktail was also extremely strong and syrupy and could definitely be toned down a little to make it more enjoyable and easier to drink.
One thing I absolutely have to mention: all the food is halal, which is always a massive bonus for me.
Overall, I wouldn’t say this was the best roast I’ve ever had, but it certainly wasn’t the worst either. The food has plenty of potential, the portions are generous, the setting is beautiful, and the atmosphere is a big part of the experience.
For the food, I think the price is reasonable considering the surroundings. The drinks, however, are another story—I’d personally expect a little more for the price.
With a few tweaks to the service, communication around serving times, drinks and a couple of details on the plate, I genuinely think Decorum could become a very strong contender for a good roast spot in Birmingham.
It's also family-friendly.
Definitely worth visiting for the experience, the atmosphere and, of course, those stuffing balls! 😂
